Gold Canyon Lions Club Casino Night sets new donation record

Gold Canyon, AZ--The 2011 Gold Canyon Lions Club Casino Night to benefit a range of Lions Club services and other local charities set a new club donation record. Approximately 300 people attended the 2011 Gold Canyon Lions Club Casino Night and set a new overall donation record. For the past six years, the Casino Night has proven to be one of the Club's largest fundraising events of the year, and the 2011 event was no exception. Overall, the event raised $12,000 for the benefit of Camp Tatiyee and local charities.

Funds raised from the event will go towards the Lion's Club special needs camp, the Foundation for Blind Children, helping the club provide glasses for those in need and support for the visually and hearing impaired.

Gold Canyon Lions Club Publicity Chair, Linda Sorbakken, was delighted by the amount of donations collected by the 2011 event. "The Gold Canyon Lions Club Casino Night was a huge success," she enthused, "The Club extends a special thank you to all those who provided support for Casino Night, a great time was had by all."

The event featured food, raffles, a silent auction, and of course, blackjack tables, craps and a Texas Hold-em tournament. The highlight of the evening was the live auction of a number of desirable items including a Holland America cruise for two and Southwest airline tickets.

Overall, 37 local business sponsored the event and another 68 business and individuals donated items to the silent auction, which was attended by approximately 300 people.

Much of the focus of the Lions Club as a service club organization is to raise money for worthy causes. All funds raised by Lions Clubs from the general public fund are used for charitable purposes, and administrative costs are kept strictly separate and paid for by members. Some of the money raised for a club’s charity account goes toward projects that benefit the local community of an individual club.

The Gold Canyon Lions Club is one of 46,000 Lions Clubs in 206 countries around the world. Lions International consists of 1.3 million Lions worldwide. The state and international arms of the organization provide emergency support for disasters around the world and support research and more far-reaching eye care.

Lions Club meetings are held the first and third Thurs. of every month from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Oct. though April, at the Preview Center of the Gold Canyon Golf Resort on Kings Ranch Road.
